How to maintain paint protection film

PPF maintenance is genuinely easy, but a few Adelaide-specific rules make the difference between film that stays glassy for a decade and film that stains, lifts or dulls early. The whole routine comes down to washing gently, drying properly and keeping harsh things away from the edges.

Washing: the two-bucket, pH-neutral rule

Hand-wash the car with a pH-neutral shampoo using the two-bucket method (one bucket of soapy water, one of clean rinse water for your mitt, so you are not grinding grit back onto the film). This is the single most important habit, because most film scratches come from washing, not driving.

• Use a soft microfibre wash mitt, never a sponge or brush.
• Wash in the shade, not on a hot panel in direct Adelaide sun, so shampoo does not flash-dry.
• Rinse thoroughly before you wash to float off grit.
• Avoid automatic brush car washes entirely: the brushes scratch film and can catch and lift edges.

Drying: beat Adelaide's hard water

Adelaide has notably hard water, high in dissolved minerals. If you let the car air-dry, those minerals stay behind as chalky white water spots that bond to the film and are a nuisance to remove. Always dry the film after washing:

• Use a clean, soft microfibre drying towel or a plush drying blade technique.
• A filtered or de-ionised final rinse (spot-free rinse) removes the minerals before they can dry.
• Dry promptly, especially in summer heat when water evaporates fast and spots set quickly.

What to keep away from your film

A few things genuinely damage PPF, and avoiding them is most of the job:

Dealing with bugs, tar and bird droppings

Remove bird droppings, bug splatter and tar promptly, because Adelaide's summer heat speeds up the acidic etching that can mark even film. Soften the contaminant with a dedicated pH-neutral bug or tar remover and warm water, then wipe gently: never scrub dried-on debris off dry, which drags grit across the film. Because quality film self-heals, any light marks left from removal often clear themselves once the panel warms in the sun.

The easiest maintenance trick of all

The simplest way to make PPF care effortless is to have a ceramic coating applied over the film. The coating's slick, hydrophobic surface means dirt, bugs and hard-water minerals struggle to bond, so the car rinses cleaner with less contact and dries with far less spotting. It is the single biggest upgrade to day-to-day film maintenance, and it protects the film's clarity at the same time.

Most film that looks tired at year 5 was not worn out, it was washed wrong. Gentle hands and a proper dry are what keep film glassy for a decade.
